This site is a tribute to John Roles. He is much loved and will always be remembered.
John was born on the 9th October 1957 in North London.
The family moved to Cheltenham in 1966 for John's most formative early years and where his passion for local history developed.
He studied at Sheffield and Leicester Universities.
He first gained experience working in Cheltenham Museum before the opportunity came for him to establish a new museum in Royston, Hertfordshire.
He was then appointed Keeper of Local History and Archaeology at The Royal pavilion, Art Gallery and Museums in Brighton where highlights included his award winning 'My Brighton' community history project and 'Sussex Churches and Chapels' exhibition.
The challenge came in 2004 for John to transform Leeds Museums and Galleries during which time visitor numbers have increased from around 350,000 to £1.6 million.'
John was such a lovely person - I will miss him....
